World 0: Occam's Trashworld

Description

- World 0: Occam's "Trashworld" -

BASICS

The twilight zone of World 0, a planet tidally locked to its star, is where all contestants arrive after being transported by Occam. The best way to describe this place is that it's got just enough going for it to support your garden variety Earth-like life, but barely more than that. There are minimal hazards here, enough water to drink, and a fair selection of food items to hunt and forage for.

GEOGRAPHY

- Moderate and Inoffensive

World 0 is fairly flat, sans some gentle hills and modest mountains here and there. There are enough slow-flowing rivers and other water features to provide contestants with places to drink, bathe, and perhaps fish (?). There's very little soil here, since there's barely enough organic matter to make any more than a very thin layer in low-lying areas.

- Avoid the Coast

... Something seems wrong with the ocean... It smells caustic. Nothing appears to be living in the coastal waters or growing along the shoreline.

WEATHER and ATMOSPHERE

- Dry, Cold, and Dreary

World 0 isn't particularly warm, and humid conditions are pretty rare and only exist in the lowest valleys. Rainfall is almost unheard of, though sometimes a cool fog rolls in or a few thin, stringy clouds float overhead. The region the contestants are in is constantly shrouded in twilight. The sun never rises, though its faint light never fades. The east is the lightest area of the sky while the west is the darkest.

- Thin Atmosphere

The night sky really is beautiful here because of the dry air and thin atmosphere, but there are disadvantages to this. Contestants have been placed safely in the twilight belt of World 0 where the sun never fully rises, but if they were to be exposed to the sun, it would probably burn them in short order due to heat and radiation that such a wispy covering wouldn't protect them from. Small meteor showers that actually make it to the surface also happen occasionally. Better find cover!

LIFE

- Hodgepodge

Occam isn't... necessarily a creature that's very in tune with the workings of normal living things that exist outside of her heavily-radiated, black hole circling kingdom, so she did the best she could by simply grabbing smatterings of everything she could find from various worlds and plopping it down onto World 0's surface, hoping something would take. Thankfully, some small and hardy things did, but this means that there are a lot of plants and critters here that shouldn't be put together. Look on the bright side, though! This makes it unlikely for contestants to get mauled by huge, savage beasts... assuming none somehow managed to scrape out a living here...

- Dead Stuff Everywhere

Considering the unceremonious introduction of new species to World 0, plenty of organisms just didn't make it. Dead and decomposing organic matter, plant and animal alike, can be found littering the landscape. Nasty.

- Fungal Wonderland

Due to the lack of complex life here and the abundance of dead things, the most successful and varied organisms on this planet are actually molds and fungi. Large tracts of land are covered in fuzzy (and thankfully harmless) lilac colored mold, taking the place of grass, moss, and other similar ground coverings. Some world's variety of giant mushrooms have managed to get a good foothold here. (Hint: Don't eat the bush-sized orange ones!)
